POP UP PENGUINS - Wild In Art 2020

'Punk It Penguin'

When I entered my design to be considered it was 'flat', not 3D, and was really hard to draw and caputre what I wanted to achieve.  Luckily for me that organisers at Wild In Art believed in my vision and what I was trying to convey and they commissioned me to start Punk It - with permission to just go crazy on the Steam Punk design and use 3D materials.  I scored most of the pieces used from op-shops, Creative Junk, and dumps.  Old toys, bolts, homewares, drink bottles, yoga mats, bath mats and much much more!  And with a little painting magic all that junk became this armoured Steam Punk creation!

Once he was finished, Wild At Art found a sponsor for him - Social Currenancy.

He will be on the Pop Up Penguin Trail until Feb 2021, afterwhich he will be auctioned off (along with 100+ other amazing penguins!) in support of the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in Christchurch.  CHOICE!

Birds of a Feather - by NEST Arts Collective

This penguin was so much fun to work on, and a lot of work too!

Mel Eaton (co-founder of NEST) designed the consept for this beautiful piece, while myself, Belinda and Mel of course painted him and bought the vision to life!  There are a total of 11 NZ native bird species represented!

You can find him outside The Port and Eagle in Kaiapoi until auction!

Murals

Broomfield School Mural

Sponsored by Resene 'Wall Worthy' Competition 2020, this mural reflects our landscape and was created alongside each student of the school -194 triangles in total!  Each class represented a colour/landscape feature, to bring together this unique and stunning mural.  The classes came down to my workshop at NEST to get stuck in with painting their 'piece of the puzzle':

Light blue - The sky

Dark Green - The Mountains (Mt Grey)

Light Green - The hills

Yellows - The fields/grass/hay

Reds and Browns - Whenua / The people and the land / Earth

Purple - The Vineyards
Dark Blue - The Rivers (Waipara)

After the triangles were painted, the students helped to glue them to the wall, and I completed the project with a bold 'BROOMFIELD' and grafitti guard to keep it safe and long lasting.  Such a fun project to be involved in!

Amberley Playcentre Mural

Celebrating our place, this mural reflects our landscape and nature (Mt Grey, Three Deans, Beach and River).  I was super thrifty on this one and sourced most of the paint from transfer stations / dumps / secondhand shops!

Waipara Adventure Centre Mural - welcoming campers with our bold bright logo

Art in the making...

Teeny tiny pieces of paper!  These works were created by cutting out paper from Frankie magazines, and pasted onto canvas and board, completed with acrylic paint. I love working with mixed media.
